A digital file carries the promise that what appears on screen can be faithfully summoned into the world by machines. Achieving fidelity between digital intention and material outcome, however, demands a choreography of design, code, motion, craftsmanship, and material.

This gallery exhibition brings together machine-made ink drawings and carved wood panels generated from a shared g-code. While the g-code specifies similar coordinates and velocities, it yields differing outcomes, whether pen on paper or end mill through wood grain. Through these differences, the work reveals the often invisible labor of human and machine that translates digital intention into physical form, prompting reflection on the reciprocity between virtual and physical realities.

Virtual Reality: Architecture, Culture, and the Body by Tatjana Crossley

Thursday, January 29
6:30 to 8:30 pm

Throughout history, humans have told stories using language, art, and the built environment to convey experience. This book explores the evolving relationship between design, culture, and the body, examining how our virtual narratives shape identity, memory, and collective meaning. Rather than viewing virtuality as separate from reality, this book argues that it is an inherent condition of lived experience—deeply embedded in the material world.

The gallery exhibition presents a selection of prints drawn from the book. It invites visitors to step inside one of its central spaces: an immersive reconstruction of a fantastical paradise imagined by Livia Drusilla, wife of Emperor Augustus in Ancient Rome. At the opening reception, Crossley will speak about the book and the ideas that shape the exhibition.
